Woman allegedly torched by husband dies

SUNGAI PETANI - A 44-year-old mother of one has died of severe burns after she was allegedly torched by her husband.

Doctors at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital informed police of her death at 8.27am Tuesday.

Kuala Muda deputy police chief Supt Saifi Abd Hamid said a man, believed to be the woman's husband, was arrested and remanded on May 1.

Police will obtain a further remand order on the suspect on Thursday. The case has been reclassified as murder.

Supt Saifi said the woman's son, 19, who lodged a police report on the May 26 incident, said the attack took place at about noon.

"The son said his mother was washing chicken behind the house while he was in the room.

"All of a sudden he heard his mother screaming and saw her engulfed in flames then saw his father fleeing on a motorcycle," he said, adding that the son took his mother to the hospital.

It is learnt that the 46-year-old husband, who has been homeless for two years, was angry after his wife filed for divorce and refused to stay with him.
