Police have arrested a 38-year-old woman for dumping her newborn into a washing machine.

Moments after being arrested yesterday at noon, the woman confessed to committing the act at her house in Kampung Ulu Dulang Kecil here.

Yan OCPD Deputy Supt Muhamad Halim Yatim said the woman had given birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of the house at Kampung Ulu Dulang Kecil, where she stayed with her husband and four children.

"She claimed that the father of the baby is her husband. But we will ascertain this with a DNA test," he added.

He said the woman, a housewife, was being warded at Yan Hospital.

It was reported that padi farmer Zainol Hamid, 71, the woman's father-in-law, was watching TV in the house when he heard a baby crying on Tuesday night. He traced the cries to the washing machine. The baby's umbilical cord was still intact.

The baby, weighing 2.86kg, is receiving treatment at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar.

Zainol said he was stunned by the arrest of his daughter-in-law. "I did not even know that she was pregnant. If she does not want the baby, our family members would have been happy to help her out," he said.
