Woman loses hubby and then her handbag

ALOR SETAR - Barely two hours after her husband passed away, retired nurse Che Piah Abu's handbag got stolen while she was praying at a surau.

Che Piah, 56, was at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital surau to say a prayer for her 57-year-old husband who passed away due to a stroke at the hospital at about 2pm yesterday.

While inside the surau at about 3.30pm, she had placed her handbag just beside her.

She had wanted to pray for her husband while waiting to claim his body.

"Suddenly, I realised that my handbag was missing."

"I quickly told my son, who was waiting nearby, and he went to look for a woman whom he had seen behaving suspiciously near the surau," she said.

Her son managed to locate the woman, in her 40s, at the hospital and when confronted, she admitted stealing the handbag.

The thief returned Che Piah's MyKad to her son, but said she had disposed of the handbag.

Che Piah was not sure how much money was in the handbag.

The woman was detained by security guards and subsequently taken away in a police car at about 5.30pm.
