PUTRAJAYA - A gathering of youth will take place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit to bring them closer to each other.
The Youth Summit - a Malaysian initiative - is aimed at creating greater integration among ASEAN youth and to encourage more active communication among the people.
Wisma Putra deputy director-general of ASEAN external relations Zamruni Khalid said the special summit would be held on the sidelines of the 27th ASEAN Summit that will be hosted by Malaysia in November.
"This will be an opportune time for young people of the region to come together and throw ideas or discuss issues of their interest," he said.
The Youth and Sports Ministry would be the lead agency for the Youth Summit.
Zamruni said that as the ASEAN chair, Malaysia would be hosting a series of regional meetings throughout the year, including five major ones.
The highlight of the meetings would be the two ASEAN summits that will be held in April and November.
Kota Kinabalu would host the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat next week while Kota Baru would be the venue for the ASEAN Economic Ministers Retreat in March.
The 48th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting and Post-Ministerial Conference would be held in Kuala Lumpur in August.
Malaysia's theme for ASEAN 2015 is "Our People, Our Community, Our Vision".
