SUNGAI SIPUT - Barisan Nasional component parties should resolve their internal problems and strengthen the coalition in its march towards the next general election, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said this was necessary to ensure that Barisan would win big.
"The next elections is not far off, just over two years and five months away. So, I want the Mentris Besar and Barisan's chairmen in other states and the Barisan chairmen of parliamentary constituencies, including Sungai Siput, to return often to their respective constituencies to prepare the election machinery.
"Do not be seasonal leaders, returning only during elections," he told delegates when opening the Sungai Siput Umno division meeting here yesterday.
Present were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who is also Perak Umno liaison committee chairman, and Sungai Siput Umno division chief Datuk Zolkafly Harun.
Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is an Umno vice-president, also reminded component parties whose members were not selected as electoral candidates not to be disappointed but mobilise their machinery to ensure a landslide victory.
Previously, he said "winnable candidates" were fielded but now it had to select "likeable candidates" who could serve the community.
Earlier in Ipoh, Dr Ahmad Zahid said action would be taken against Bersih 4 participants.
"Police are monitoring the people behind it. They are listening to every word that's being uttered.
"This is not a warning or promise; action will be taken," he said after the opening of the Ipoh Timur Umno division meeting.
When that happened, he said the rally participants should not accuse the Government of cruelty.
"They are being cruel to themselves. I agree with the Inspector-General of Police when he said berani buat, berani tanggung (be brave enough to face the consequences of your own actions)," he said.
Division chief Datuk Azian Osman urged Dr Ahmad Zahid to exercise his authority as Home Minister to arrest the rally participants.
"It is an illegal assembly. Catch everyone of them," Azian said, adding that Umno could also mobilise its people if the party wanted to.
"I'm confident we can get 200,000 to the ground.
"It will be blue and red versus yellow," he said.
Dr Zambry agreed that Umno was capable of mobilising its people but chose not to do so.
"Certain parties are inciting hatred among the people but Umno will never do that," he said.
