More than 900g of heroin seized at Woodlands Checkpoint, suspect nabbed

A 20-year-old Malaysian man was arrested on Monday morning for allegedly attempting to traffic about 900g of heroin into Singapore.

A joint statement from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on Tuesday (April 26) said that the suspect had been riding a Malaysia-registered motorcycle when he was stopped by ICA officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

The officers found the drugs in the suspect's bag and he was arrested. The suspect, together with the seized exhibit, were referred to the CNB for further investigations.

In the course of investigations, CNB officers recovered another 460g of heroin and about 120g of 'Ice' from the suspect.

The entire seizure is estimated to be worth more than $86,000.

Investigations are ongoing, said the statement.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, those convicted of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine or pure heroin can face the death penalty. The quantity of heroin is sufficient to feed the addiction of about 180 abusers for a week.
