Getting ready for digital TV: MDA replies

The world is transitioning from analogue TV to digital TV, and Singapore has to embrace this trend ("Make it easier to get digital signals" by Mr Lo Chock Fei; last Saturday).

To ensure a smooth transition, MediaCorp will simultaneously broadcast its analogue TV channels for at least two years from the start of digital transmission this month, until Singapore completes the switchover to digital broadcasting.

This will give households time to get accustomed to receiving their TV signals digitally.

If your TV set is connected to a StarHub TV or SingTel mio TV set-top box, you do not need to do anything as you are already able to watch the MediaCorp channels in digital quality through your pay-TV service.

If you are not a pay-TV subscriber, or if you have additional TV sets not connected to pay TV, all you need to do is buy an antenna and a DVB-T2 digital set-top box and connect it to your existing TV set to watch digital TV.

If you are thinking of buying a new TV set, to future-proof your purchase, you may wish to consider getting an integrated digital TV with a digital TV-ready label.

Such a TV set does not require a set-top box because the digital tuner is already integrated into the set. You just need to connect the TV set to an antenna.

StarHub's cable infrastructure is a commercial network. If this infrastructure is tapped, parts of the network would need to be replaced to enable non-pay-TV subscribers to continue to receive digital TV, resulting in additional costs and inconvenience to households.

The DVB-T2 set-top box or integrated digital TV and antenna option will enable you to receive digital free-to-air TV without the need to pay monthly charges.

Digital TV terrestrial set-top boxes and antennae, which are widely used in Germany, the United States and the Netherlands, come in compact designs and provide households with more flexibility in placing their TV sets without the need to search for a fixed TV point.
