Google drives huge chunk of online traffic

SAN FRANCISCO, California - Network analytics specialty firm DeepField on Monday said that Google accounts for nearly a quarter of Internet traffic in North America.

"Based on measurements of end devices and user audience share, Google is now bigger than Facebook, Netflix and Twitter combined," DeepField chief Craig Labovitz said in a blog post.

While popular online video streaming service Netflix has larger bandwidth than Google, peak traffic levels last for a few hours each evening while about 60 per cent of all Internet-linked devices exchange information with Google servers in North America every day, according to DeepField.

The analysis included traffic from computer Internet browsers as well as mobile applications and "embedded devices" such as Apple TV, Roku, and videogame consoles, according to DeepField.
