Season's snappings
Spread festive cheer by taking your best smartphone shot

It's a time for presents and pixels.

December means thousands descend upon Orchard Road not only to shop, but also to capture scenes of themselves and their loved ones bathed in the glow of Christmas lights.

Of course, you want to take the best shot possible and for some people, that means using the best camera.

Full disclosure - that is what I thought too, when I started this assignment.

For two nights, I visited various Christmas light displays armed with my standard-issue DSLR and a variety of lenses.

But after two nights, I only had one shot that I was actually happy with. That is the main image of this spread.

It was the subject of that image that inspired me to simplify the process.

The saying goes that "the best camera is one that is always with you". These days, that is the one on our smartphones.

I realised that the more equipment I had on me, the more that meant over-thinking the technical aspects - which lens to use, the aperture and speed settings.

Using a big camera also meant I was more conspicuous. People often paused to let me get my shot when it was the spontaneity I was hoping to capture.

So I set myself a challenge. Get beautiful shots under the lights using just my smartphone.
