Site-blocking considered for fighting piracy

SINGAPORE - People here who visit illegal download sites for their movie and music fix could have trouble doing so in future.

The Government is thinking of blocking such websites as a measure to combat online piracy.

Senior Minister of State for Law Indranee Rajah said in Parliament yesterday that it is not a "100 per cent solution" but, based on a preliminary view, it is "certainly one way that can reduce online piracy".

The ministry will consult industry players and the public on site-blocking in the coming months. However, Ms Indranee stressed that there is no silver bullet to fighting online piracy and that public education, legitimate content and appropriate regulatory measures are required.

"There will always be those who may be inclined to access pirated material if it's free" but, with respect for copyright, people would be encouraged to move towards legitimate content if it is made accessible, she said.
