Xiaomi's upmarket cousin

The crowds who snap up Xiaomi phones in a matter of minutes would probably not have heard of another Chinese smartphone brand - Oppo.

Unlike Xiaomi which sells cheap phones of high quality, Oppo offers high-quality smartphones at slightly less than what Samsung charges. But it throws in some unique features as well.

The Oppo N1 is a case in point. It comes with a touch panel, O-Touch, at the back of the phone, which is not unlike what LG has for its G2 smartphone, enabling users to scroll, tap or take photos.

The phone camera is rotatable, unlike other smartphones which have front and back cameras, with the former usually of lower quality. And should the N1 be misplaced, it can be recovered with the help of a Bluetooth-connected token, O-Click. If the O-Click is separated from the N1 by more than 15m, a buzzer will sound. And if the O-Click is pressed, the N1 will emit an alarm.

The N1 is a well-finished smartphone with strong specifications, quite different from the knockoffs which gave Chinese-brand smartphones a bad name.

It is no Xiaomi price-wise, but it can easily stand its own against the Korean smartphones which dominate the market.

How much: $769
