Charlene Choi is in no rush to get hitched

Hong Kong actress-singer Charlene Choi may be in a stable relationship for four years now, but the 32-year-old is in no hurry to get married.

Choi, more affectionately known to fans as Ah Sa, was in town last Thursday for the opening of multi-label fashion store i.t at Orchard Gateway.

The event attracted over 600 fans and guests.

In 2010, it was revealed that the popular star had been secretly married to fellow actor Ronald Cheng for four years, and was getting a divorce.

Later the same year, she announced that she was dating Hong Kong singer and fellow labelmate William Chan, who is three years younger than her.

Speaking to The New Paper, Choi said candidly: "I was married once in the past, so I am not rushing to get married again. I can afford to wait a bit more, and focus on my career now.

"The last time, I was too young and made rash decisions. Now, I will think carefully before making the big leap."

She said that she would get married only if she wants to have children, giving herself a deadline of "probably 40 years old".

"I feel like I am still a little kid myself now. I cannot imagine taking care of my own children," Choi said.

NO PRESSURE

The Cantopop singer - who is one-half of the female duo Twins (the other half being Gillian Chung) - also reasoned that since Chan is younger, there is no pressure from him to walk down the aisle anytime soon.

But if she does becomes a mother, Choi wants to raise her children here.

"Singapore's education system is very good, and I've many friends who have brought their kids here," she said.

Even though the couple are constantly busy, their hectic schedules do not interfere with their relationship, Choi said.

"I don't like guys who are too clingy. He has his own life and is building up his career.

"We are both still young and should focus on our careers now. It's better like this," she said.

THREE MORE THINGS ABOUT CHOI

1. She's into K-pop Choi admits that the K-pop craze has got to her, and she is a huge fan of popular boy band Big Bang. Her favourite member is T.O.P.

"I've seen their concert thrice, flying to Korea and Shanghai to catch them live," she said.

But she does not see a need to work with them. She said: "I don't want to be friends or colleagues with them. I'd rather just admire them from afar and be a fan."

2. Ignored Chapman To for five years

Choi collaborated with To, 42, on several movies after he signed on to the same label as her. But she started detesting him after he called her a bitch in Cantonese.

She said: "I used to pretend he's invisible every time I saw him - for five years. He is so acid-tongued. It wasn't until he apologised to me that I forgave him."

3. Box-office numbers don't bother her

Her recent film Let Go For Love - which she co-starred with To - bombed at the Chinese box office. This came after mainland netizens called for a boycott of To's films following his support for a Taiwanese political movement.

"As an actress, I think my main duty is to act well in my movies. The box-office numbers are not as important as the filming process itself," she said.
