Hat's amazing

Hat's amazing

Expect fancy hats galore at the Singapore Airlines International Cup, which will heat up Singapore Turf Club next Sunday.

Veterans will tell you that when going to the races, the more bizarre or outlandish your hat, the better.

We ask prominent local stylist Kovit Ang and make-up artist Khai Lee for some tips on how to stand out from the crowd on race day, whether it is the big event next Sunday or the Emirates Singapore Derby in July.

Take a cue from these looks so that you make a grand stand at the grandstands - without frightening the horses.

Mad-hatter whimsy

A frenzy of clashing patterns come together in this distinctly mischievous and head-turning ensemble, which is perfect for those who like taking risks.

Mr Ang: I was inspired by Alice In Wonderland. Don't be afraid to go bold with your colour-matching when trying to achieve this theme. Polka dots and stripes? Bring them on!

Wear this turban-like multi-layered floral hat sideways to accentuate its dimensions.

Mr Lee: Complement the look with a daring red lip, which will ensure that your face retains that healthy glow and doesn't look too pale or overwhelmed by the outfit.

The Grey Rabbit

Easter may be over, but who says you can't pull out the stops with this bunny top hat?

Blur the gender lines by pairing it with a baggy grey jacket with a blue vest underneath for a fun twist on the morning coat gents traditionally wore at the races.

Matching grey trousers ensure that you stay fashion-savvy without compromising on comfort.

Mr Ang: This unique top hat is a conversation-starter and will look great in photos with friends and selfies.

Mr Lee: Keeping your hair neat and tucked away is a good option when wearing tall or large hats. A side bun suits this look well.

Super Glam

The larger-than-life wide-brimmed tulle hat is the star in this outfit and it will send your glam factor through the roof.

Transform the grandstand into your personal runway with this long gold gown, which is full of sequins.

It also features a high thigh slit for that touch of Angelina Jolie sexy.

Mr Ang: As the hat is wide, go sleek and figure-hugging with your clothes. It helps to balance things out.

Mr Lee: Use blusher or shading powder shade and define the contours of your face as this prevents it from looking flabby under the large hat.

Also, applying some mascara on the lower lashes and white eyeliner on the lower lash line. This can create a beautiful doll-like effect, which will go great with this look.

Finish it off with a lip gloss that has some gold pigmentation or shimmer. This will make up for all the light the hat will be deflecting.

Sweet like Candy

Accentuate the delicate features of this lightweight hat made from abaca with this pink bustier dress, covered with rosette appliqués.

Complete the charming ensemble with a layered crystal necklace.

Mr Ang: The genius in this hat is that it lets hair peek through the hat, allowing the wearer to showcase her crowning glory even with something covering it.

Mr Lee: Big hats may cover the top half of your face and your eyes, so elaborate eye colours are unnecessary.

Instead, use a fine but long line with a wing tip to define the eyes so that they really stand out. Hair-wise, go classic with a twist with this do featuring a mix of lose and tight curls pinned up.
