Honey, they "blue up" their clothes

United States - The Smurfs 2 premieres had me feeling all kinds of blue.

Did almost everyone involved in the animated sequel lose their imagination?

And I'm not just talking about the screenwriters.

The female cast members decided to do the obvious by turning up in various versions of the little blue dress, as if trying to pull off their best Smurfette impression.

Let's just say the results were cartoonish, all right.

1) Katy Perry's grandma Ann Hudson, whom the 28-year-old US pop star brought along as her date, was the best dressed in Los Angeles.

Sporting an adorable printed T-shirt - bearing the slogan "I've got the hots for Papa Smurf" - and blinged-out walking cane, she totally overshadowed Perry, who reprises her role as the voice of Smurfette.

Perry's matronly cobalt blue Tadashi Shoji sleeveless frock, featuring beaded floral applique mesh bodice and flared leather skirt, was dull by Katy Perry standards, and those matchy-matchy Pedro Garcia pumps with black trim were simply too twee.

2) Britney Spears - who contributed the song Ooh La La to the movie soundtrack - practically sleeps in Herve Leger bandage dresses which make her look like a Vegas nightclub hostess.

So it was no surprise she turned up on the blue carpet in a dated-looking turquoise V-neck version with black panelling and equally predictable black platform pumps.

At this point, I've given up wishing for the 31-year-old US singer to try a new style.

3 US actress Christina Ricci, 33, voices Vexy, a mischievous "Naughty" Smurf created by evil wizard Gargamel to wreak havoc. True to her character, she misbehaved off-screen in New York as well.

Her teal and white strappy Thom Browne printed midi dress was too tight and unflattering, but that's the least of Ricci's problems.

The styling was disastrous, as neither the green snakeskin Casadei pointy pumps nor milkmaid braided updo meshed with the outfit.

And can someone explain to me what are those wonky things growing out of her hips?

4) Wow, Jayma Mays was living dangerously by veering from the colour scheme.

Back in Los Angeles, the 34-year-old US actress, who plays the Smurfs' human ally Grace, stood out in a sea of blue with her silk satin Paper London fuchsia pink short-sleeve top and marigold flared pleated high-waisted skirt.

As if that wasn't blinding enough, she threw in highly-distracting B Brian Atwood neon multi-coloured floral booties. It would have been a cute, fun look - on someone 10 years younger.
