Stars hit by 'Depression'

Their label is Depression, but with celebrities like Zhang Ziyi donning their designs, Singaporeans Andrew Loh and Kenny Lim have nothing to feel blue about.

The 34-year-old Chinese actress recently wore the label's In Your Face dress at a Shanghai press event for her latest film, My Lucky Star.

The black dress has a white face on the side and long tassels that simulate hair.

At another press event for the same movie in Chengdu, she wore their Melting Wax dress.

Both dresses are from the label's 2012 collection.

Zhang and co-star Wang Lee Hom were also in Singapore earlier this month for My Lucky Star's gala premiere at Marina Bay Sands.

Mr Lim, 36, tells The New Paper on Sunday: "It was simply super amazing that an A-lister like Zhang Zhiyi would choose to wear our dress."

Depression, which has an outlet at Cineleisure Orchard, was set up in 2006.

Mr Loh, a former graphics designer, and Mr Lim, a former writer, got to know each other while they were working in an advertising agency.

Mr Lim says it was Zhang who expressed interest in Depression's pieces and asked hairstylist David Gan to link her up with the label.

Mr Loh says: "It is so nice to see her (Zhang) in something so fun and chic because she's usually seen in ball gowns. We immediately started getting reactions on social media and it felt really good."

Zhang is not the only star to have taken to Depression.

Last month, singer Adam Lambert wore the label's Transformer Creepers to the MTV Video Music Awards.

"That was a surprise as we had no idea he even knew about us. We were just so happy that we were deemed worthy enough to be paired with a Lanvin suit," says Mr Lim.

And with celeb support comes a boost in sales.

Mr Loh says: "Ever since Zhang Zhiyi wore that dress (earlier this month), many people have come looking to buy both dresses."

For those looking to emulate Zhang Ziyi, the In Your Face dress costs $189, while the Melting Wax dress costs $199.
