PADANG BESAR - Fourteen pupils and a teacher were injured when ceiling panels at their school canteen came crashing on them.

It is believed that blasting activities at a nearby quarry had caused some loose pieces to land on SK Chuping's roof, causing the collapse yesterday afternoon.

A colouring competition was being held at the canteen then.

The students suffered injuries on their heads and shoulders.

It is believed that flying rocks had also damaged the roof of the girls hostel and science laboratory.

Islamic Education teacher Norhayati Mat, 35, said that she was injured when a projector fell on her.

The school's senior assistant in charge of student affairs Azura Ariffin said that the teacher and pupils were rushed to the hospital.

"Luckily, they didn't have any serious injuries," she said. "This is not the first time such an incident has happened but the impact today (yesterday) was quite bad."
