PETALING JAYA - An additional 82,000 students in matriculation programmes and Lower Six will receive the 1Malaysia book vouchers worth RM250 (S$97).

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that the vouchers would be distributed during the first week of September.

"The Government takes the welfare of these students seriously and has decided to provide a one-off distribution of these vouchers," he said in a statement yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said the vouchers would be valid until Oct 31.

The students who had registered for the 2013/14 matriculation intake and Lower Six in May and June, would be eligible for the book vouchers, he added.

He said that the book vouchers were meant to ease the financial burden of buying books.

It was also meant to encourage the reading habit.

When tabling the Budget last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced that all matriculation, Form Six, polytechnic and tertiary students would receive book vouchers worth RM250.
