Blogger expelled from Indonesian university for being critical

INDONESIA - The Indonesian Students Press Association (PPMI) has lambasted the management at Dian Nuswantoro University for expelling one of its students, Wahyu Dwi Pranata, after he wrote critical articles about the university on his blog.

"The PPMI strongly condemns the dismissal," the association's secretary-general, Defy Firman Al Hakim, said on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.

He said the university's management should provide a clarification if Wahyu's comments were considered incorrect.

Defy said the PPMI was considering reporting the case to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Education and Culture Minister Muhammad Nuh and the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dikti).

Wahyu criticized Dian Nuswantoro University over various issues, including tuition fees, existing facilities and financial management transparency. The university's management decided it had had enough when Wahyu wrote a provocative poem coinciding with the inauguration of new students that criticized the university.

The management then offered Wahyu two options: leave the college or stay and face charges of defamation.
