New tuition centre offers more than just book smarts

A tuition centre launched last month aims to set itself apart from the rest of the pack.

Located in Jalan Pemimpin, the TMC Learning Hub aims to help students become well-rounded, independent and academically prepared, so that they can achieve success in and beyond school.

The centre targets secondary school students. It offers them not just academic lessons, but also life-skill development workshops, as well as seminars for parents to help them understand and help their children.

During school holidays, the centre organises workshops for students, aimed at developing soft skills such as confidence. This is to help students discover their strengths and overcome life challenges which they may face as teenagers.

The first seminar for parents, about raising teens, was conducted last month.

Such seminars aim to encourage parents to bond with their children, and to help their kids reach their full potential.

Weekly tuition classes cover the following subjects: English, Chinese, Elementary Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Physics.

TMC Learning Hub produces its own course materials, which follow the syllabus set by the Ministry of Education.

Lessons last for two hours and there are eight students per class, on average. Class sizes are kept small so that teachers can monitor the progress of individual students.

The lessons aim to encourage critical thinking and creativity. For instance, students in the English classes will be asked to read widely and go through a critical-thinking process when writing essays.

Examination strategies will also be taught throughout the year, such as ways to approach exam questions.

Towards the end of the year, the centre holds a twice-weekly final-year intensive revision programme, at no additional cost.

Such programmes are meant to help Secondary 3 and 4 students prepare for their O levels.

At the end of the year, the centre will be introducing classes for pupils from Primary 3 to 6.
