The new year will see some changes in management appointments at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

From 1 January 2014, Professor Mohan S Kankanhalli, Associate Provost (Graduate Education), will be appointed Vice Provost (Graduate Education), a new senior management position created to strengthen focus and provide value for a quality graduate education.

A professor of computer science at NUS' School of Computing, Prof Kankanhalli is among the world's foremost experts in Multimedia Systems, Digital Video Processing and Multimedia Surveillance, Security & Privacy. He has contributed immensely in the area of multimedia content processing such as image and video retrieval, and computational media aesthetics as well as in multimedia security which includes multi-camera surveillance, content authentication and privacy. He also serves as Co-Director of the Sensor-Enhanced Social Media (SeSaMe) Centre, a collaborative effort between NUS Computing, Singapore's Media Development Authority and Zhejiang University in China.

On 1 April 2014, Professor Andrew Wee Thye Shen will be appointed Vice President (University and Global Relations) and concurrently relinquish his position as Dean of NUS' Faculty of Science. Prof Wee takes over the role of Vice President (University and Global Relations) from Professor Lily Kong, who will continue to serve as Vice Provost (Academic Personnel).

Prof Wee, Dean of Science since 2007, is a leading authority in surface and nanoscale science, scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron radiation studies of the molecule-substrate interface, graphene and related nanomaterials. He heads the Singapore National Academy of Science as President and is Director of the Surface Science Laboratory in NUS Science's Department of Physics. Prof Wee is also an adjunct scientist at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering.

Taking over from Prof Wee as Dean of Science on 1 April 2014 is Professor Shen Zuowei, a Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor currently heading the Department of Mathematics.

An internationally-established mathematician, Prof Shen enjoys worldwide recognition for his pioneering contributions to the field of applied mathematics. The major awards he has received include the Wavelet Pioneer Award from the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers in 2012, the National Science Award in 1998 and the NUS Outstanding Researcher Award in 2008 and 1997.

Prof Shen has also been invited regularly to speak at prestigious conferences and workshops around the world, including the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010, where he was the first Singapore-based academic to be invited as a speaker at the prestigious event. He has also been invited to give a lecture at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2015.
