SINGAPORE - Ms Yap Sze Ling, a fourth year Northlight School student is one of 1,600 students who wrote tributes to their favourite teachers as part of the "I Love My Teacher 2013" Awards organised by the South East Community Development Council (CDC).
Wrote Sze Ling about her favourite teacher, Mdm Lee Peng Peng: "She inspires me to be a true woman of respect, dignity and self-esteem as she is."
Said Sze Ling: "She's the first teacher who got involved in helping me in my financial and family problems. She even came to visit my mother late in the evening when she was hospitalised. This is not something a normal secondary school teacher would do. And I really want to thank her for her love not just for me, but for my classmates and the school."
On Thursday afternoon, Mdm Lee Peng Peng, together with 12 other teachers in the South East District who had exemplified excellent performance in teaching and caring for their students, received their prizes from the Mayor of the South East District, Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman at the "I Love My Teacher 2013" Award Presentation held in the Golden Village Gold Class Lounge at Katong I12 Mall.
At the ceremony, three winning students also recited their touching entries to the audience.
Said Mayor of the South East District, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, at the closing address for the event: "South East CDC is very pleased to provide this opportunity for students to express their gratitude to their teachers. The significant increase in the number of participants over the years is an encouraging indication that our youths are looking beyond themselves and appreciating the people who have made a difference in their lives. It is also heartening to know that there are many teachers who are transmitting to their students not just content, but also the right values in life. I hope the students whose lives have been touched, will be inspired to touch others' as well."
