Chua Chu Kang GRC MPs announce upgrading masterplan

Residents of Chua Chu Kang GRC can expect at least $385 million worth of upgrading and improvement projects over the next five years.

These include covered linkways, a network of cycling paths, two new community clubs, and more playgrounds and fitness corners.

The Chua Chu Kang Town Council unveiled the masterplan in a press release yesterday.

The announcement came on the eve of Nomination Day, and the incumbent People's Action Party (PAP) team in the GRC - which heads the town council - is expected to face a team from the new People's Power Party, which has yet to announce its slate, in the four-member GRC.

The four PAP candidates were announced two weeks ago. Incumbents Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, Parliamentary Secretary Low Yen Ling and backbencher Zaqy Mohamad are joined by newcomer Yee Chia Hsing, a banker.

The masterplan outlined three main areas of focus - better access to public transport, new spaces and upgraded facilities for community activities, and programmes for the young and old.

A network of cycling paths, approximately 6km long, will be built and more bicycle racks will be installed. Sheltered linkways will also be built to and from the MRT and LRT stations.

New MRT stations at Ten Mile Junction and Hillview - part of the Downtown Line - will start operations on Dec 27 this year.

More than 3,900 households will undergo the Home Improvement Programme, while over 5,800 households will come under Neighbourhood Renewal Programmes.

The new Bukit Gombak Community Club in Hillview Avenue and Keat Hong Community Club in Chua Chu Kang Avenue 4 are also slated to be ready next year. The former will have eco-friendly features such as a community spice garden, while the latter may include a bowling facility.

Mr Zaqy told The Straits Times that residents have been asking MPs about the next phase of development for the middle-aged estate.

"The masterplan reflects how we want to develop Chua Chu Kang into a vibrant, sustainable community," he said.

Asked if the plan will go ahead if his team does not win the elections, he said: "A lot of these plans are on the assumption that (residents) put a good team in place that can deliver them on time and on budget. The commitment of our team... can be seen in our track record for the past five years."
