SINGAPORE - The People's Action Party (PAP) has won 83 out of 89 seats in Parliament in the Singapore General Election 2015.
They lost seats in Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC which were won by the Workers' Party (WP).
At the close of poll, a total of 2,304,331 votes were cast in Singapore, inclusive of 47,315 rejected votes. This made up 93.56 per cent of the 2,462,926 registered electors, said a statement by the Elections Department.
This is a slight increase from the record low of 93.06 per cent at the last election.
AsiaOne was at Bedok and Hougang where PAP and WP supporters and candidates gathered respectively.
On WP's win of Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC, Mr Low Thia Khiang said WP recognises and accepts Singaporean voters' choice at this election.
He said that the swing to the PAP can be attributed to a more responsive government.
When asked if the AHPETC issue affected WP's performance, he said he has not had time to properly assess, but noted the swing had been across the board and affected all opposition parties. He also said that he is satisfied with the parties' performance and stressed that WP will continue to work hard.
The PAP held a press conference after their win. Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong thanked voters and said he was happy with the outcome of the election.
The PM said he was "very pleased" with the result in Aljunied GRC. "We very nearly won - to the point where we forced a recount. And we missed only by 0.9 percentage point, and that's it. But next time we will get there," he said. He thanked the Aljunied team, Victor Lye, Yeo Guat Kwang, Murali, Chua Eng Leong, Shamsul Kamar doing "an excellent job", and also thanked Mr Lim Boon Heng who helped to coach and mentor the team to reach this point.
Echoing similar sentiments as Mr Low in his replies to the media, PM Lee said tonight is not the time for hindsight when asked if a stronger team should have been sent to Aljunied GRC.
PM Lee also said his first order is to reshuffle the Cabinet so younger faces are put into positions of responsibility quickly. He ended the press conference with: "Go forth to SG100".
