170 years no mean feat for a print daily

170 years no mean feat for a print daily

There are no words to express my astonishment at receiving yesterday's copy of The Straits Times.

My immediate response on browsing through the bumper issue was to message my friends to get a copy before they ran out.

The 60-page special on the 170 years of The Straits Times ("Living History") was certainly a gift to all Singaporeans, and a timely one for the nation's 50th birthday.

I have been an ardent fan of The Straits Times since 1978, when I was just 13, and have been collecting special editions of the paper's publications, such as the 150th-year commemorative book.

Yesterday's edition, printed on better quality paper, is definitely a keepsake for anyone who wants to own a piece of Singapore's history.

It was also a kind gesture to allow readers to download the e-book free, as an SG50 gift to Singaporeans.

The paper has survived the test of time and proven that print editions do have a future in this world, despite technological advances.

The quality of The Straits Times has improved tremendously over the years, and being around for 170 years is not something all dailies can achieve.

The paper still serves its core purpose of disseminating information accurately and effectively.

I am one of those who have benefited from the paper's articles, and occasionally keep some of them for historical significance and knowledge.

I wish The Straits Times a happy 170th anniversary and its team a successful journey ahead in journalism.
