Kids need to learn to live independently

SINGAPORE - Thank you for the article "Have helper, so dump it on her" (My Paper, May 19), about treating domestic workers more humanely, with dignity and respect.

A trained counsellor, I want to bring up one more point.

A lot of children here who grow up without doing their own chores find it very difficult if they have to live abroad on their own.

Some of them even suffer from depression as they are unable to handle their higher education/work and home responsibilities.

Parents who spoil their children are doing them a big disservice by not preparing them to live independently.
