Local prime time dramas comes with subtitles

Reader Chiang Ging Seng, in the letter "More should have English subtitles" (The New Paper, Aug 11), said he was pleased to watch Percaya Lagi, shown on Wednesdays at 9pm on MediaCorp's Malay channel, Suria, with full English subtitles.

We thank Mr Chiang for his feedback, including comments about the programme, which he felt "can motivate young people to walk the right path and should be made accessible to the widest audience possible".

Mr Chiang suggested that channels which broadcast in vernacular languages should carry English subtitles on their programmes as far as possible.

Suria subtitles all its locally produced dramas and educational programmes aired during prime time.

When we acquire foreign content, we also place a priority on finding programmes with subtitles.

We have the same practice on our Chinese channel, Channel 8, and our Indian channel, Vasantham, to cater to a wider audience.

We take great encouragement from having viewers like Mr Chiang who enjoy watching our locally produced programmes in our different vernacular languages.
