Mixing of trash, recyclables taken seriously

WE THANK Ms Yong Wenya for her letter ("Trash, recyclables mixed together"; Jan 29).

Public waste collectors (PWCs) must collect recyclables and waste separately and separate trucks must be used.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) monitors the collections by the trucks via GPS to enforce the separate collection of waste and recyclables.

This is complemented with spot checks on the ground.

Our investigations show that the recyclables from a condominium in Ms Yong's vicinity were collected by a refuse truck on Sunday, Jan 25.

The cleaners at the condominium had earlier that day put out both the waste and recycling bins for collection.

We take a serious view of such incidents and will take action against the PWC for collecting waste and recyclables in the same truck.

We have also reminded the management of the condominium that the recycling bins should be put out for collection only on the scheduled day of the week for collecting recyclables.

Waste and Resource Management Department
