I have been following the recent changes to the Employment Pass (EP) regulations and the reactions of those who were directly affected ("Back to Manila after failing to get permit"; Monday).
It is common for EP holders to apply for permanent residency, so they can be employed here for a longer period. But some do not even own or rent a home here, and instead commute to Singapore for work every day.
What would permanent resident status mean if their intent in applying for it is purely economic? The EP would serve the purpose better.
The various government agencies need to work together so that the system is not abused.
