I am grateful to the police for bringing the situation in Little India under control. No tear gas and water cannon were used, and the restraint shown should be an example for the police forces of other countries.
To prevent future incidents, the recruiting centres should ensure that foreign workers are told, in no uncertain terms, that violence is not tolerated here.
And before work permits are issued, employers should provide reports from the workers' home countries stating that they have not been involved in criminal activities or violent protests there.
