SINGAPORE - The Straits Times, the flagship newspaper of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), will introduce a new mobile app for the iPad and Android devices on Friday, June 27, 2014.
The Straits Times Star (ST Star) app will house a collection of digital publications, starting with The Life, a monthly magazine packed with articles on style, design, pursuits, travel and food.
The ST Star app will bring to a wider audience the newspaper's brand of journalism in an exciting interactive and multimedia format.
"Our readers are looking for interesting content to sit back and enjoy on their mobile devices," said Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez. "Our newsroom has been gearing up to meet this need, finding new ways to tell great stories in words, pictures, videos. Our aim is to make the most of what we can do on each platform that we serve readers on."
Through the app, readers can explore exclusive features from the paper's award-winning journalists, photographers and videographers, all brought to life in a sophisticated blend of text, visuals and interactive elements.
Said associate editor Sumiko Tan, who is editor of the ST Digital team: "Our approach in ST Star is to reimagine storytelling. The digital space allows us to create beautiful, exciting experiences for our readers and we hope they will join us in this journey."
The Straits Times Star app (http://www.straitstimes.com/st-star-app) can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The e-publications in the app are designed for tablets and optimised for the iPad.
The ST Star app launches with The Life magazine, produced by the newspaper's Life! team and multimedia designers from The Straits Times Digital team.
Among the stories in the launch issue of the lifestyle magazine:
- An exclusive interview with Louis Vuitton's artistic director, Nicolas Ghesquiere;

To tie in with the launch of the ST Star app, The Straits Times is organising a contest where a lucky reader stands to win two business class Cathay Pacific air tickets to Hong Kong and a two-night stay in a five-star hotel there.
To stand a chance to win, readers just need to download the ST Star app and the first issue of The Life, and answer a question they will find on the contest page in the magazine.
Two other readers will each get $1,000 worth of shopping vouchers. The contest details and terms and conditions are available in The Life Magazine.
The ST Star app is an extension of The Straits Times Appreciates Readers (Star) programme, an ongoing effort to reach out to readers and the community.
