Singapore's fashion design contest, Audi Star Creation, will showcase the 2014 winners Vu Ta Linh and Sun Yijin's capsule collections at an invitation-only runway show as part of Audi Fashion Festival 2014 (AFF2014), on May 16.
After working under the mentorship of Douglas and Odile Benjamin, from Singapore label Raoul, the two young designers will debut their capsule collections inspired and influenced by their respective traditional cultures.
Vu Ta Linh, 27, is from Vietnam and his collection entitled "Indigo" was inspired by a popular Vietnamese song; his experience as a student at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema working on tradition theatre costumes was also inspirational.
Chinese designer Sun Yijin, 25, was inspired by the four seasons despite being titled "Winter". Her memories of the season in China after moving to the tropics of Singapore inspired her to think about the mashing-up two ‒ soft clean snow and colours of the tropics; traditional handicrafts, colours and shapes from the 56 ethnic groups of her homeland also inspired her.
"The past year, I have helped guide both Linh and Yijin to bring their visions and inspirations to fruition," says Mrs Odile Benjamin, divisional CEO of FJ Benjamin and a mentor to both designers. "It has been hugely rewarding, spending time with them to distill and bring to life their creative thoughts and ideas into beautiful collections which will finally see the light."
