6 questions with quirky shoe queen Sophia Webster

6 questions with quirky shoe queen Sophia Webster

We met up with Sophia Webster while she was in Singapore, to find out more about her insect-inspired "Supa Dupa Fly" Spring Summer 2014 collection.

In the video below, the designer shares more on how she translates unexpected details like iridescent beetle wings to very covetable designs on her shoes of the season.

Is it of any real surprise that Sophia Webster, queen of quirky-cute heels, travels with as many as eight pairs of shoes?

The British shoe and accessories designer admitted to herworldPLUS that "four pairs should be ample" for a single trip but that she can't resist taking twice that number with her wherever she's flying to.

The currently five months' pregnant Webster was in Singapore at the On Pedder Scotts Square boutique on April 15, 2014, to promote her Spring Summer 2014 collection. Webster is expecting her first child with Bobby Stockley, who is also the managing director of her eponymous shoe and accessories brand.

Known for colourfully zany yet feminine shoes, the talented 28 year-old designer has seen her fashion star on the rise ever since she made her debut with a Yayoi Kusama-inspired Spring Summer 2012 collection.

Barely a year later, Webster, who was mentored by top British shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood, was awarded the Emerging Accessory Designer accolade at the British Fashion Awards in 2013. She's got a strong celebrity following too: Her shoes have been seen on stylish stars like Rihanna, Jessica Alba, Rita Ora and Solange Knowles.

In a stylish tie-up with On Pedder, the designer created a unicorn bag in silver, a colourway that is exclusive to On Pedder's multi-label designer boutiques in Singapore. Available at $290 each, only 20 bags have been brought to our sunny island.

Webster tells us more about her Spring Summer 2014 collection and some very handy travel tips from one shoe addict to another.

HWP: Tell us more about your Spring Summer 2014 collection.

Sophia Webster (SW): "My Spring Summer 2014 collection is a world of flora, butterflies and clouds. Inspired by [Japanese photographer] Mika Ninagawa, the collection is made up of intense and hyper colours combined with a dark edge."

How did your collaboration with On Pedder begin?

SW: "On Pedder has been a great supporter of the brand from the start and I'm hugely appreciative of this. I feel the buyers have a great eye and really get my aesthetic so when I had the opportunity to take part in these meet-the-fans events I jumped at it.

I designed a unicorn bag partly inspired by the year of the horse whilst planning the events with the On Pedder team, which we have produced in an exclusive colourway [for On Pedder]."

As a frequent traveller yourself, what's your go-to shoe style, when you're travelling?

SW: "At the moment I live in my Juana espadrilles, they are so comfy ‒ so perfect for travelling, as long as its somewhere warm!"

How do you store your shoes in your suitcase, to keep them in perfect shape?

SW: "A good tip is to stuff them with small items of clothing and of course keep them in their dust bag."

You are known for your love of pink; in your opinion, what's an easy way to wear this sweet shade, for a special occasion?

SW: "I'll wear pink with anything. But a statement shoe in pink with a contrasting little black dress would look great for a special occasion."

We've seen your gorgeous wedding photos. Is there any chance you might venture into a bridal shoe line soon?

SW: "I have been known to take inspiration from what is present in my mind, most recently being baby shoes and children's shoes - so watch this space …"
