Icon Gallery

Icon Gallery presents Icons, an exhibition depicting notable figures from the worlds of music, sports, film and more.

Six artists, including Horace Panter, bassist of British ska band The Specials, tackle subjects such as Nelson Mandela, Marilyn Monroe, Mick Jagger and Ayrton Senna. Their works span a wide range of media including paper sculpture, mixed-media collage, oil and acrylic portraits and confetti art.

1 AMY WINEHOUSE, 2013

Panter graduated with a degree in fine art from Coventry's Lanchester Polytechnic in 1975, where he met Jerry Dammers. Together, they formed The Specials, a group which became one of the defining British bands of the 1980s. Panter's recent paintings and collages pay homage to his favourite musicians and are influenced by artists such as Peter Blake - the pop artist who co-designed the sleeve of The Beatles' iconic 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Andy Warhol and German painter Kurt Schwitters.

2 CHIC 'GOOD TIMES', 2014

In Panter's cassette series, the artefact is celebrated along with the cultural and historical contexts of seminal albums and the recording studios they were made in.

3 MARILYN MONROE, 2014

Douthwaite, who is based in Britain, works in two mediums: confetti art and collage. Her unique portraits are crafted from thousands of paper dots made with household hole punchers. The tiny paper dots are painstakingly stuck on a board with tweezers and built up in varnished layers to create a highly visual coloured mix.

4 THE ROLLING STONES 'BROWN SUGAR', 2014

Howell's work celebrates an icon of contemporary pop culture, the seven-inch single. He creates 3-D paintings about 15 times the size of a real single. His artworks are created with a 27-inch black vinyl disk, on which he paints all original details, and he makes the vinyl sleeve out of canvas bags.

5 JAMES HUNT, 2013

The British artist specialises in large-scale, heavily textured, "explosive" oil paintings characterised by his trademark "splats". His sole focus is visual impact and he captures characters in a unique way, creating an impression of energy and a 3-D effect with a 2-D medium. Hunt is a British racing driver who won the Formula One World Championship in 1976.

7 THE KILLERS' WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG, 2008

Wakefield's artworks combine music and technology. He enlarges and customises the sound patterns in songs and transforms them into works that reflect the nature of the music. Each art piece is signed by the musicians, including English singer-songwriter James Blunt and American rock band The Killers, whose song the pieces have been created with.

8 T-REX COLLAGE, 2014

Brown is a contemporary Scottish artist who creates abstract paintings in mixed media, acrylic and oil paints and collage. His multi-layered compositions celebrate the spirit of modern culture and portray icons from the world of music, film and sport.
