SHANGHAI - It was his first time visiting China, and fashion tycoon Michael Kors made sure his maiden voyage would be an extravagant occasion.
According to Hong Kong press South China Morning Post (SCMP), the 54-year-old Kors was in town to celebrate the opening of his Shanghai flagship boutique on May 9 at Kerry Centre, together with top international stars and fashion personalities.
Hollywood stars Hilary Swank, Camille Belle and model Miranda Kerr were notable guests at the party, which was attended by about 1,000, along with top Asian stars such as Carina Lau, Angelababy and Frieda Pinto.
Set to the theme of "Jet Set Experience", the party was held at a private hanger in Hongqiao Airport where its star-studded guests came together to enjoy a night of opulence and high fashion.
The centrepiece in the hanger was a live-sized parked jet in the middle of venue, on loan for display from John D. Idol, chairman and chief executive officer of Michael Kors Holdings Ltd, said SCMP.
At every fashion party, a show is a must-have in the programme and this event was no exception. Guests were treated to a fashion showcase featuring a one-off "Jet-set" collection, created exclusively to mark the occasion. Other looks included Michael Kors' signature evening gowns to swimwear and even its mountain resort wear, reported SCMP.
Large-scale videos were also projected against the walls in the hanger to provide an aerial view of the modelling walking down the runway.
The 54-year-old New York-based designer currently has 9 boutiques in the Chinese republic, reported SCMP, and the brand has plans to open 20 more stores in greater China in 2014.
Kors launched his label in 1981 and took his company public in 2011. In February 2014, Kors was named a billionaire by Forbes.
The billionaire fashion entrepreneur is reputedly one of the world's most well-known designers after he appeared as a judge for 10 seasons of international fashion reality show "Project Runway" with German model Heidi Klum.
He has a strong celebrity following with singer Beyonce and actresses Kate Winslet and Jessica Alba donning his looks on the red carpet. US First Lady Michelle Obama is also a fan of Michael Kors and has worn his dresses on many occasions such as election night and the Presidential Inauguration in 2013.
