PETALING JAYA - Some 78,000 visitors thronged KLIA2's recent open day to get a first-hand feel of the new airport.
The staggering numbers had tripled from its earlier estimation of 20,000 visitors, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in a statement.
"The number of visitors hit 20,000 even before noon, with visitors flowing in non-stop as early as 8am, an hour before the registration counters opened.
"Long queues could be spotted at the registration counters and also at tour checkpoints," it said of the open day on Sunday.
Following the response, MAHB extended the open day from 5pm to 7pm to allow the public more time for the tours as the crowd was still heavy even in the late afternoon.
MAHB said the KLIA2 terminal would be closed for further cleaning and final preparations from yesterday until the terminal officially commences operations on Friday.
"We would also like to inform the public that the KLIA2 open day was meant as a one-day event only," said MAHB.
The national airport operator thanked the visitors for attending the open day and providing positive and constructive feedback.
