PUTRAJAYA - Police confirmed that the passenger on board AirAsia X Flight D7 171 who died on Friday was an Indonesian man.

It was believed that the deceased, 64, was on his way to Kuala Lumpur from Jeddah and was due to transit at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) for his flight back to Jakarta.

The nationality of the passenger was confirmed by Sepang district police chief Superintendent Mohd Yusof Awang when he was contacted by the New Sunday Times yesterday.

Yusof said the body was sent to Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem and the cause of death was undetermined but added that no foul play was suspected in the death and specimens have been sent to the hospital's chemistry department for further tests.

"A family member of the deceased has been informed and the body will be sent back to Indonesia as soon as possible via the consulate," he said.

AirAsia X Bhd had confirmed the matter in a statement on Friday and said relevant authorities and family members had been duly informed.

The airline also said necessary assistance would be provided.
