SINGAPORE - A change to the Goods and Services Tax Act will allow the authorities to seize goods and make arrests if fraud is suspected under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS).
A tourist suspected of knowingly making refund claims for fictitious purchases, for example, may be arrested, but only after "extensive checks", said the Finance Ministry, which tabled the amendment in Parliament on Friday.
The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore will provide more information about TRS fraud in the next couple of months.
