Motorists get stuck in Rawang after three-hour downpour

RAWANG - Motorists were stuck in a crawl along Jalan Batu Arang after a three-hour downpour caused a flash flood here.

The congestion affected traffic from both directions between Rawang town and Kundang yesterday morning.

"Many people were affected by the flash flood as it occurred during the morning hour rush," said Selayang Municipal councillor Gunarajah R. George.

"We had to ask the developer of Emerald East to allow motorists to head to Rawang town via their property. This was just a temporary access for motorists who would otherwise be stuck."

Gunarajah said several homes in Kampung Sungai Bakau were also flooded and a retention wall had collapsed.

"The flood was quite bad this time as 28 houses in Kampung Sungai Bakau were flooded. The water level reached up to 2.5 feet (0.6m)," he said.

"The collapsed retention wall had been put up at a corner lot house in Bandar Country Homes. Two cars were damaged when the wall collapsed on Jalan Desa 2/3."

Selayang MP William Leong said discussions were held with the Drainage and Irrigation Department to ensure drainage systems linked to streams and rivers were not blocked.

"Soil erosion is not the only cause of blocked drains as there are irresponsible people who dump rubbish indiscriminately or place permanent covers over drains that prevent them from being cleaned up," said Leong, who visited the sites affected by the flood with Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei.
