$40,000 for this fridge

Would you buy something for $40,000 on a whim, just because it looked good?

Well, Dr David Bell sheepishly admits he did that.

The 42-year-old surgeon, who lives alone, tells The New Paper on Sunday: "I took one look at the fridge and decided it was the one."

He added that the Fhiaba fridge fit perfectly with the chic, industrial aesthetic of his three-storey house at Serenade Walk in Ang Mo Kio, which he moved into last year.

"How could I say no to the Rolls Royce of fridges?" he asks with a cheeky smile.

He says he has no regrets at all, given that he fully utilises his fridge - especially the shelves that can be rearranged at will.

It certainly looks like it has been used well as the huge fridge is filled with food and drinks.

This fridge is not the only thing he has splurged on.

In fact, Dr Bell spent about $180,000 on the kitchen, including its renovation.

He admits that he only wanted the best for his kitchen because he loves cooking.

He spent months researching the appliances he needed for his "dream kitchen".

"I work long hours, so I like to relax by cooking," he says.

"When I come home after a long day, I like whipping up a quick meal," says Dr Bell.

On weekends, he usually cooks a more elaborate three or four-course meal. Sometimes, his friends come over.

He shows this reporter photos of a "simple" meal that he made for his friends - pumpkin soup, a main course of chicken, and creme brulee.

"I like to entertain friends in the kitchen. They come over once in a while and I'll cook for them," says Dr Bell.

In fact, that is why he also installed a Teppanyaki grill.

He also has a customised hood, an induction stove top and two ovens.
