What comes to mind when you think of British grub?
Fish and chips? Bangers and mash?
Siblings Tom and Henry Herbert are determined to debunk the myth that British food is not the best in Europe.
The British duo, better known as The Fabulous Baker Brothers, also want to show viewers that Britain is not a "wet, damp and uninspiring country" but a "melting pot of people, food and dazzling countryside" through their new TV series, The Fabulous Baker Brothers: A Bite Of Britain.
The culinary programme, showing every Wednesday at 7pm on TLC (StarHub Ch 427), sees them travelling the country to find tasty local ingredients.
The brothers - Tom, 37, is a baker while Henry, 27, is a chef and butcher - admitted to M via e-mail that while their home cuisine may not win any best-of prizes, there is indeed some "great food out there".
Does it irk you that when people think of British food, they think of fish and chips, bangers and mash, or even Indian food?
Not really, because all of these dishes are amazing if done well.
We have to be known for something. The problem for tourists is that they do not always get the best, as good local eats are so often off the beaten track and you have to hunt them out.
If you are visiting Britain, try to avoid food in a tourist area. Instead, take the plunge - refer to a guide book, walk 10 minutes and you will be rewarded.
So do you think British food is the best in Europe?
Unfortunately, that's hard to say, but Britain is the most diverse and you will be spoilt for choice.
We have a habit of embracing other people's cultures, but also, for the last 15 years, we have been rediscovering our own food heritage, and this has made for a tasty country.
What is the uniqueness of British cuisine?
Being an island with constant changing weather makes us the perfect place to grow an abundance of produce.
The meat in Britain is second to none and our vegetables aren't bad either. From ales and cheese, to ice cream and wasabi, we pretty much do it all.
How has filming the show changed, if any, your perception of British food?
We always knew there was great produce out there because we have cooked with lots of it, but it was cool to meet the people behind the produce. They really brought it to life.
Has food always been a part of your life?
We are the fifth generation of bakers in our family... Food has been our life for as long as we can remember, and is a part of us and we can't be without it.
