Food Picks: Feel skinny with salad

Skinny Salads, which opened last Friday at 100AM in Tanjong Pagar, is the latest salad bar to set up shop here. The 32-seat restaurant offers salads and wraps, and is an offshoot of Spa Esprit Group's Skinny Pizza chain.

One thing I like is that this salad shop does not use canned vegetables. The produce is fresh and crisp, from freshly shucked grilled corn to crunchy sprigs of watercress. Its dressings are also made from scratch. Salads start at $9 a serving.

Options range from an Organic Chicken & Spinach salad with radish, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, parsley, corn and a cumin-yogurt dressing to an Asian-style Soba & Watercress salad with daikon, pickled ginger, mint and cucumber, with a soya-sauce ginger-shallot dressing.

The Kale & Quinoa salad, with beetroot, quinoa, tomatoes, sprouted lentils and zucchini comes with a tarragon-parsley verde dressing that awakens the palate.

For something more hearty, opt for any of its eight wraps ($8.50 to $10.50 each), such as Egg & Bacon with tomato chutney and rocket; Master Stock Pork Belly with Vietnamese salad, mint, coriander, nuoc cham dipping sauce and kimchi aioli; and Seared Tuna & Tapenade with roasted peppers, tapenade, egg, lettuce, basil and lemon aioli.
