Hawker dishes at Changi Airport's food street

Nasi lemak and fried kway teow are some of the most popular local hawker dishes that travellers can now tuck into before flying off from Changi Airport.

Occupying about 1,000 sq m on the third level of the transit hall in Terminal 3, the Singapore Food Street features 13 stalls offering more than 200 dishes.

Among the famous hawker stalls are Changi Village Nasi Lemak, Newton Circus Satay Bee Hoon and Old Airport Road Fried Kway Teow.

The new joint food also features Peranakan-style decor and old-style pushcarts seen in the 1960s.

"The Singapore Food Street brings to the airport Singapore's colourful hawker food culture, which is a big part of the average Singaporean's lifestyle," said Changi Airport Group senior vice-president for airside concessions Ivy Wong.

"Not only do travellers now get to sample the best of local delights in Changi Airport, they can also dine in an environment that is uniquely Singapore."

Changi's three terminals boast more than 120 dining outlets, with more than half in transit areas.

Separately, a Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman yesterday said Singapore welcomes the decision by Australia to permanently extend SmartGate, which offers self-service passport processing options in the country's major airports, to eligible Singapore passport holders.

"This move reflects the close bilateral ties shared by Singapore and Australia and will further enhance the already-close people-to-people links between the two countries," he added.
