Singapore bar named 10th best in the world

SINGAPORE -It may be a nondescript bar with no signboard, but it has been on the World's 50 Best Bars for two years running.

Named after its address, 28 Hong Kong Street was ranked 10th in this year's list, up 32 places from last year.

The bar opened in October 2011, and is popular for its cocktails and bar bites which cost under $25. Drinks are created by co-founder Michael Callahan, who won the 2011 United States Bartenders' Guild Cocktail World Cup.

Its founders were huge fans of the cocktail bars in New York, and wanted to bring a part of that for Singaporeans to experience, general manager Joe Alessandori told Drinks International.

One interesting thing about the bar is that for the uninitiated, it is a challenge to locate it as it is hidden behind blank shutters in a 1960s-looking storefront. With its accolades, it is worth a visit to see if it measures up.

The list, compiled by Drinks International and voted by industry professionals, also saw Tippling Club ranked in 45th place.

Drinks on the menu at the Dempsey bar are divided according to dry, sweet, sour and spice flavours. Don't expect your drinks to be served in a typical cocktail glass with a boring name. Think names like 'Chinaman in Mexico' and 'Valley of Nine Villages', and drink vessels such as beakers and tins.
