Thousands queue up for free burritos

SINGAPORE - First, it was to buy doughnuts. Now, it is to get free burritos.

A little over 3,000 people headed down to Asia Square Mall's foodcourt to queue for free burritos and burrito bowls at Guzman y Gomez Singapore's new outlet on Thursday.

This was part of the Australian Taqueria chain's tradition where new stores give away free burritos on their opening day. 3,165 burritos were given away.

A queue formed 15 minutes before the stall opened at 11am, and about 600 burritos were given out every hour, according to Guzman y Gomez.

Customers could choose any type of burrito and add on fillings such as guacamole for free.

A mariachi band was also flown in to entertain customers while they queued.

This is the Australian food chain's first international location. Steve Marks, founder of the chain, is also planning to open sit-down restaurants, similar to the ones Down Under, where customers can slurp up frozen margaritas while snacking on salsa and dips.

Where: Asia Square, 12 Marina View, Tower 2 Food Garden, 02-11 Open: 10am to 4pm (weekdays). Closed on weekends.
