The operating company of S-League side Albirex Niigata has announced plans to establish a new professional team in Cambodia.
Starting next year, Albirex Niigata Phnom Penh FC, a subsidiary wholly owned by Albirex Singapore, will compete in Cambodia's top flight, the Metfone Cambodian League (MCL).
Instead of a full Japanese roster as per the S-League, the Albirex Phnom Penh squad will comprise primarily of Cambodians complemented by a cadre of Japanese players subject to the league's foreign player cap.
The club are aiming to raise the standard of Cambodian football via the same Japanese coaching methods that have seen Albirex emerge as an S-League powerhouse in recent years. The MCL kicks off in January and will end in July.
