CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) now eye both national netball titles

They won the C Division South Zone netball title last year, but were beaten in the final in the B Division.

The C Division champions went on to lift the national trophy, while the B Division girls could not get over the hump once again, finishing second.

CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) are clearly one of the strongest schools in netball in the country, and their two teams are primed for success again this year.

At yesterday's Schools Netball South Zone finals at Yishun Sports Hall, the two CHIJ teams came out on top in both divisions to serve a warning to their rivals in the Nationals.

Up against Raffles Girls' School (RGS) in both matches, CHIJ's class was obvious, as their B and C Division teams scooped a double for the first time since 2013.

To put the cherry on the cake, CHIJ completed an unbeaten season.

HARDWORK

Speaking to The New Paper, coach Kok Mun Wai said: "The girls worked really, really hard for the past few months, and these results wouldn't have been possible without putting in the hours in training.

"I'm a perfectionist and, whenever I'm not happy with the way the girls play, I make sure they get it right.

"So it makes me really happy to see the girls not just win the title, but also end the zonal season without a single defeat."

For almost two months, the two teams have swatted aside all comers in the South Zone, winning six games each to reach their respective finals.

In the C Division final yesterday, the CHIJ girls whipped RGS 33-17, while their B Division counterparts rolled over the Raffles outfit 37-18.

RGS coach Chng Li Li was gracious in defeat, saying: "You can see that CHIJ are a really solid team. They were tremendous today.

"For us, it's a lesson learnt. We'll work on what we need to work on.

"The story doesn't end here for us. We'll be in the Nationals and I'm aiming for a top-four finish for both the C and B girls."

With the Nationals set to begin at the end of the month, CHIJ B Division captain Alena Ong is confident of success.

"Credit really has to go to the coach for guiding us all the way," she said.

"We are aiming to be double champions at the Nationals. I'm quite confident that with commitment and desire, we can do it."
