DUNGUN, Malaysia - A state cyclist was killed after he fell off his bicycle and was run over by his escort van, making it the second such accident in four months.
Mohamad Asmui Ali @ Awang was cycling with 15 teammates at KM71 of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan near Pulau Serai here at 11am yesterday when the accident happened.
Terengganu Sports Council director Zainal Abidin Hussin said the 20-year-old fell off his bicycle and the van driver could not avoid him.
"He (Mohamad Asmui) was trying to avoid a puddle and lost his balance," said Zainal at the Dungun Hospital yesterday.
Mohamad Asmui died due to severe head injuries.
The cyclists were headed for Kuantan, on their way to Sepang, in a convoy preparing for the Sapura Kencana - SIC Sepang Criterium Series competition this weekend.
Terengganu Cycling Association president Datuk Ahmad Sidi Ismail, who was distraught over the accident, said Mohamad Asmui was a promising talent.
He said the team was supposed to stay overnight in Kuantan before heading for Kuala Pilah in Negri Sembilan the next day and to Sepang the day after.
