Darren Loh Cup raises $6k

Football had always been Darren Loh's passion, so his schoolmates laced up their boots to honour him in the best way possible.

Yesterday at Anglo Chinese School (Independent), over 300 players took part in the Darren Loh Cup, a football tournament held in memory of the late student.

Darren was 17 when he died after suffering a heart attack while on an overseas school trip last year.

This is the second year of the competition, and the latest edition was organised completely by students, led by a six-man organising committee.

Colin Oon, 17, was one of the six. He said: "We organised the tournament to raise awareness for heart conditions, as well as raise funds for charities.

"To see the Darren Loh Cup grow like this every year is an extremely proud moment for us."

A total of 27 teams took part in the seven-a-side football competition, across all three categories - Under-16 (seven teams), U-19 (10 teams), and open (10 teams).

Registration was open to the public, and this year's tournament included two all-girls' team.

A total of $6,000 was also raised, and all of it was donated to the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF).

The SHF also set up a booth to educate players and supporters on heart conditions, and conducted free heart screenings.
