F1: A race back in time

The 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix is set for a race back in time.

The weekend of racing along Marina Bay from Sept 19 to 21 will include the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship.

The support race will showcase a grid of 20 Formula 1 cars from 1966 to 1985, otherwise known as "the golden era" of racing - in addition to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

Comprising historic three-litre engine Formula 1 cars from the 1970s and 1980s, Masters Historic Racing promises a thrilling glimpse of history and a superb spectacle of sight and sound, said Ron Maydon, president and founder of the Masters race.

"We will bring 20 of the most iconic North American and European cars from Formula 1 history," said Maydon.

First Time

"It will be the first time that motor racing fans in Singapore will see such classic cars race in action.

"We are confident that they will enjoy the sights and sounds of a super-fast history lesson just as much as watching their current Formula 1 heroes."

The Formula 1 season is currently on a one-month break before action resumes with the Belgian Grand Prix on Aug 24.

The Grand Prix circuit will head to Monza, Italy, before its stop in Singapore - the 14th race out of 19.

Singapore fans will be on tenterhooks when the race carnival heads here as Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are involved in a red-hot battle at the top of the standings, with the German (202 points) currently heading the world championship standings, but only 11 points in front of his British teammate who is second.

Along with the roar of the engines from the Grand Prix and the Masters race, fans here can also look forward to concert performances by Jennifer Lopez, Robbie Williams and John Legend.

Said Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd: "The Masters are a great addition to our support track action.

"We are delighted to select the best of the best historic Formula 1 cars to race under Singapore's lights, just like their modern counterparts at the Marina Bay Street Circuit."
