Fandi's family gives out food to needy families

SINGAPORE - Fandi Ahmad's wife Wendy Jacobs and sons Irfan, Ilhan and Iryan yesterday (Dec 8) joined volunteers to help pack and distribute 500 food bundles for 1,000 needy families.

The local football legend's family were part of household appliances Electrolux's #happyplatesg community initiative, which runs until the end of the year.

Launched on World Food Day (Oct 16), the #happyplatesg initiative is supported by The Food Bank Singapore. It aims to raise awareness about food waste in Singapore, which according to the National Environment Agency, amounted to 788,600 tonnes in 2014.

People are encouraged to post pictures of empty plates on their social media accounts after having a meal, with the hashtag #happyplatesg.

Over 1,800 people have supported the #happyplatesg initiative to date.
